This week we celebrate Christmas. We commemorate the
birth of Jesus Christ, the prince of peace. Various countries celebrate the
occasion with music, caroling, and exchange of cards and gifts. The spirit of
Christmas is associated with the spirit of love.
In a world beset by civil wars, famines, terrorism,
and suffering, for many, love and peace will be remote.
Racism, xenophobia, and selfishness contribute to
obscuring the message of Christ.
I want my friends and colleagues, in 49 different
countries, to know that “central to Christianity is the tenet, as it
has come down to us, that we reach out when our instinct is to pull inward, to
give when we want to take, to love when we are inclined to hate, to include
when we are tempted to exclude.” (John Meacham, Time, July 30, 2012).
We need to apply the spirit of Christmas every day of
our lives, not just during these festive days.

Questa settimana celebriamo il Santo Natale.
Ricordiamo la nascita del bambino Gesu’, il principe della pace. Molti paesi
celebrano l’occasione con musica, canti, e scambi di cartoline e regali. Lo
spirito di Natale e’ associato con lo spirito dell’amore.
In un mondo assalito da guerre civili, carestie,
terrorismo, e dolore, per tanti, amore e pace saranno remoti.
Razzismo, xenofobia, e egoismo contribuoniscono
all’oscurismo del messaggio di Cristo.
Voglio che i miei amici e colleghi, in 49 paesi,
sappiano che “centrale per la
Cristianita’ e’ il concetto, come e’ stato transmesso a noi, di allungare la
mano quando il nostro istinto e’ di tirare indietro, di dare quando ci piacerebbe prendere, di amare quando propensi ad odiare, di includere quando siamo tentati
di escludere.” (John Meacham, Time, 30 luglio 2012).
Dobbiamo applicare lo spirito di Natale ogni giorno
della nostra vita, non soltanto durante le feste natalizie.
